Back in the rock and roll boom of the sixties no one thought music could be listened to on a computer. And who back then thought that people could record music without paying for it? They did not worry that people would download music for free. Can you imagine the Beatles worried that people were taking their music for free?

You can get music for free on the internet if you know the simple technology required to record music onto your computer. George Harrison wrote and recorded the song, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” You can download it for free somewhere online. His guitar probably weeps for all the people who take the song for free.

Many artists start off writing, singing, or performing for free. It is a way to get noticed so that people will want to pay for your work later on. It is a way to get work. But once an established artist starts being paid, he or she does not want to work for free anymore. And he or she does not want his or her work stolen.

But the average person who downloads music from the internet without paying for it does not consider it stealing. If its on the internet, does that not mean it is free for the taking. Anything that comes off the radio is free to record. Anything off the television is free to record… Is it not?

One difference is that you have to wait for the radio to play the song you want to record. And also the internet provides clean studio playback which you can record and have a professionally sounding recording.

It comes down to copyright infringement. People sharing their music online do not in most cases own the copyright to the music they make available. When other people record or download files of music others, who do not own the copyright, then there is a violation.

You can understand this better in this example. You are allowed to make copies of a compact disc you buy but only you can use the copies as back ups. Or if you want to listen to one in your car and keep one in your home. However you cannot give or sell your copy to someone else. The same is true for files of music you have on your computer. Once you share them with someone else, the artist’s copyright has been violated.

Music companies are now actually suing people who download music in violation of copyright laws. They want to make an example to others not to do this. And they are winning multi million dollar lawsuits against ordinary people who either thought they were doing nothing wrong or thought they would not get caught.

There is an answer to this issue. There is a way to stay within the copyright law and still be able to download your favorite music. There are many pay sites on the internet where you can pay a monthly download fee or a per song download fee. The online service is responsible for dealing with the copyright issues. If there is a conflict with the music company, it is the on line service that is responsible not you.

So think twice before you download music. But do not hesitate to join a paid service. You will have your favorite music and you can click away with safety.
